The project partners
Grassroots Food Network (GFN) works to rebuild the local food economy
through practical projects and the development of local buying groups and
networks in and around the South Pennines. GFN is a not-for-profit company
limited by guarantee.
The project links with other areas of GFN and Asian Healthy Community
Network’s work, including:
- EU Interreg SOS II “Sustainable Open Space” funded programme
on marketing landscape identity;
- Working on local, sustainable supply networks for the public sector in
partnership with Education Contract Services (Bradford Council), NFU,
Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber, University of Bradford and Yorkshire Forward;
- Developing farmers’ networks and local food supply chains with Calder Valley Renaissance;
- Supporting local food community projects and growing foods in school grounds.

The Asian Healthy Community Network brings together Asian allotment
holders, gardeners and community groups to develop food growing skills.
The group works to promote the health benefits of food growing, including
increasing consumption of fresh food, particularly vegetables, exercise,
access to the countryside and fresh air.
Asian communities in the UK suffer higher rates of coronary heart
disease, diabetes and other diet related illnesses than the rest of the
population. The network has a wealth of traditional, healthy Asian recipes
showcased at cooking demonstrations at food festivals in the region.
